What this 18Z kit record covers
Key takeaways
- Vehicle and platform: the Porsche 18Z big brake kit is built around the 18Z caliper pattern used on the Porsche Cayenne 955/957, Volkswagen Touareg 7L and Audi Q7 4L.
- What ships: one axle pair carries 2 calipers, 2 rotors, 4 brake pads and 2 brake hoses, plus the adapter bracket made for the receiving car.
- Rotor path: paths on this record start at 330/355 mm and run to 440 mm, stepped by wheel size.
- Before release: installation type stays Confirm before order until the vehicle, wheel and clearance record is checked.
Record reviewed on 2026-09-18. It states what is on file, what the buyer sends, and what has not been released.
Who the 18Z record is written for
This page answers one question for two kinds of buyer: what has to be checked before an 18Z caliper kit is built for a specific car.
The retrofit buyer
One group is the owner of a Cayenne 955/957, Touareg 7L or Q7 4L who is rebuilding a worn factory brake system. The other group is the owner or workshop fitting an 18Z-based kit to a VAG platform such as a Mk5 or Mk6 Golf, an A3 8P or a B6/B7 A4. Both groups make the same first decision: does the caliper clear the wheel, and does the bracket match the knuckle on the car in front of them?
A large fixed caliper taken from an SUV, the 18Z changes what fits around it on a hatchback or sedan, so the vehicle and wheel record comes before any parts list.
What this record does not cover
Rear parking-brake variants, race use, brake fluid choice and caliper identification for other Porsche patterns sit outside this page. Those get their own check. No stopping distance, lap time or pedal-feel figure is published here, because a parts list cannot promise any of them.
A model name is not treated as proof here. Two cars of the same model year can leave the factory with different knuckles, brake packages and wheel options, which is why the VIN and the wheel data carry the decision.
The vehicle record for Cayenne, Q7 and Mk5 projects
The table below is the whole fitment file for this kit. Anything in the middle column that still reads as a check is exactly why the installation type has not moved past Confirm before order.
| Control field | On the record now | Send with the RFQ |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle identity | Cayenne 955/957 (9PA, 2002–2010), Touareg 7L or Q7 4L as the platform holders | Model, year and the 17-character VIN of the receiving car |
| Front axle | 18Z fixed caliper with radial mounting lugs | Photos of the knuckle and the caliper mounting lugs |
| Original brake package | Pending the vehicle record | Original caliper type, rotor diameter and any factory performance package |
| Wheels | 18 inch is the smallest diameter on this record | Wheel diameter, width, offset (ET – the distance from the mounting face to the wheel centre line) and, on aftermarket wheels, the spoke and inner-barrel profile |
| Rotor interface | Rotor hat bore, PCD and hat height are cut for the vehicle | Current hub register, and whether the wheel plan needs a spacer |
| Rear axle | 4-piston rear caliper option on the record | Parking-brake type on the receiving car, mechanical or electric |
Wheel size to rotor path, and the checks that decide it
Planning reference only. The table sets a starting diameter for a wheel size; the final rotor diameter, hat height and offset are fixed against the vehicle record before the kit goes into production.
| Wheel size | Front rotor path | Rear rotor path | Check before release |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 inch | 330/355 mm | 330 mm | Spoke and inner-barrel clearance; control-arm clearance at full lock on Mk5 and Mk6 cars |
| 19 inch | 355/380 mm | 355 mm | The same clearance check, plus the rotor hat bore and the spacer decision |
| 20 inch | 380/405 mm | 380 mm | Caliper-to-spoke gap, especially on concave wheel faces |
| 21 inch | 400/412 mm | 380 mm | Less common path; the wheel build is confirmed first |
| 22 inch | 420/440 mm | 405 mm | Largest path; special confirmation and a longer lead time |
Rotor thickness runs from 32 mm to 34 mm across these paths and is fixed by the configuration, not by the wheel alone. Rotor hat – the aluminium centre that carries the disc on the hub – is machined to the vehicle.
Three mistakes repeat in this market. First, an 18Z kit is not a B8 part: the upright and knuckle geometry changed, and a specialist supplier states the caliper does not sit on those cars without major conversion work. Second, Mk7 and other MQB cars are not Mk5 or Mk6 cars; they take a different bracket and a separate knuckle check. Third, a rotor diameter that fits inside a wheel is not a clearance result. The caliper body is wide, and spoke reach and barrel shape decide the rest.
What ships in one axle pair
| Component | Quantity on the record | Interface or check |
|---|---|---|
| Front calipers | 2 calipers | 6-piston fixed caliper; radial mounting lugs against the knuckle |
| Rear calipers, when ordered | 2 calipers | 4-piston fixed caliper; parking-brake type confirmed on the receiving car |
| Rotors | 2 rotors | Diameter from the wheel path; thickness fixed per configuration |
| Brake pads | 4 brake pads | Ceramic friction material; pad shape matched to the caliper |
| Brake hoses | 2 brake hoses | Braided line with the threaded male end the caliper inlet takes |
| Adapter brackets | 2 adapter brackets | Cut for the vehicle; not a one-size bracket |
| Mounting hardware | 1 set | Bolts and washers for the bracket interface |
Installation type stays Confirm before order. The bracket is made for the vehicle and the final clearance check happens with the wheel on the car. Calipers alone are not a kit: without the vehicle-specific bracket and rotor, a caliper is a part, not a kit. This SKU is the front and rear set, so an order carries both axle pairs: 4 calipers, 4 rotors, 8 brake pads and 4 brake hoses. Front-only and rear-only builds are quoted as separate axle pairs.
Materials and the limits of this record
- Caliper body, rotor hat and adapter bracket: 7050 aluminium alloy.
- Rotors: high-carbon cast iron.
- Brake pads: ceramic friction material.
- Piston diameters: To be confirmed. Two public sources disagree on the front piston sizes, so no diameter is published until the factory drawing is checked.
- Gross weight and carton size: To be confirmed until the packed kit is weighed and measured.
Material names describe what the kit is built from. They are not a test record and not a performance figure. Nothing on this page promises a stopping distance, a pad life or a track result; wear parts, installation quality and bedding decide how the kit behaves on the car.
Platform years follow the public model pages for the Porsche Cayenne and the Volkswagen Touareg, checked on 2026-09-18. Those pages confirm the generation and the model years. They say nothing about brake fitment on a specific car.
How owners, workshops and importers order
Owners and workshops
One set is the normal first order. Send the vehicle record and wheel data first; the kit is built after the record is checked. Owners usually send photos of the knuckle and the wheel barrel, while workshops send their own measurements and the pad compound they plan to run.
Dealers and importers
From 10 sets the order moves into a small wholesale batch, and from 50 sets it runs as a factory batch with packaging and caliper colour options. Send the market, the models you expect to hold and the rotor paths you want; the quotation follows the same vehicle-record discipline as a single set.
MOQ is 1 set. Production runs 3–7 business days after the 30% deposit clears, and delivery takes about 20–35 business days. Warranty is 5 years against manufacturing and quality defects only; wear, wrong installation and unauthorised modification sit outside it. Weight, carton size and price for a specific build come back with the quotation.
Questions buyers send before the VIN goes in
How do I check that a caliper is an 18Z and not a 17Z or a Macan caliper?
Cayenne 955/957, Touareg 7L and Q7 4L all use this caliper pattern. The casting and the part number on the body are what buyers use to identify it, and numbers in the 955.351.421 and 955.351.422 range belong to this pattern. Photographs of the casting, the piston bores and any readable number let the check run before the order moves.
Will my current wheels clear the caliper?
Not from the wheel diameter alone. Clearance is a two-part check: the barrel has to clear the rotor, and the spokes have to clear the caliper face. Two wheels of the same size can give different answers. Use a printed template, or send the wheel drawing with ET and spoke profile before the order is fixed. The smallest diameter this record supports sits in the rotor table above.
Do I need a bigger master cylinder?
Not automatically. Owner reports split: some Mk5 builds keep the standard master cylinder and report a firm pedal, while workshops on older or smaller cars suggest a larger one when pedal travel grows. Treat it as a check with the installer, not a rule. The kit does not include a master cylinder or a booster.
Can this kit go on a B8 A4 or a Mk7 Golf?
B8 cars sit outside this record: the upright and knuckle geometry changed, and a specialist supplier states the 18Z caliper cannot be fitted there without major conversion work. Mk7 and other MQB cars need a different bracket and a separate knuckle review, so they are not covered by the Mk5 and Mk6 notes. Model details plus photos bring back one of three answers: yes, no, or a different kit.
What brake lines do I need if I supply my own?
Match the caliper inlet. A threaded male-end line goes into the back of the casting, and a banjo fitting is the wrong interface for it. The kit supplies 2 brake hoses per axle pair; if you bring your own, bring that end type and check the routing at full lock.
What happens after I send the VIN and wheel data?
Three steps run in order: vehicle and original brake package, then wheel and clearance data, then the rotor path and bracket choice. If something does not line up it is reported before production, not after shipping. If the car is outside the platform, the answer is a different kit or no kit.
Reference photos and the next step
Twelve photos sit in this record: nine product photos from the kit library and three workshop reference images. They show parts, packing and finished installations; none of them is a fitment record for a specific car.

The product photos show the caliper, rotor and colour options as photographed; the three workshop images show a general installation sequence, a packing sheet and a loading scene. None of these images proves clearance on a specific car, and that check stays with the vehicle record and the printed template. To move an order forward, the fitment review needs the model, year, VIN, wheel size and a photo of the knuckle and wheel barrel; the answer carries the rotor path, the bracket choice, the current production window and the quotation.
