Why two 380 mm discs are not the same disc

Diameter is the number buyers quote, and it is the least specific one. A catalogue listing for one BMW family pairs six-piston calipers with 380 x 32 mm two-piece rotors, while a listing for the M cars pairs the same 380 mm diameter with 34 mm thickness. Same headline figure, different disc, different hat, different bracket.

Three measurements carry that difference. Thickness – the distance across the disc between the friction faces – changes how the pads sit inside the caliper. Hat height – the offset from the mounting face to the disc face – decides where the rotor lands relative to the knuckle. Centre bore and PCD decide whether the assembly mounts at all. A generic page that published one thickness for every BMW would be wrong for at least one family, which is why this one publishes the band and asks for the measurements.

The defect warranty runs 5 years against manufacturing and quality defects, and wear, wrong fitting or unauthorised changes stay outside it.

The refusals matter as much. No stopping-distance, fade, bias or temperature figure appears on this page, because no test file exists for the custom route. Approval documents are absent as well, and the caliper family name in the SKU carries no manufacturing relationship, sponsorship or authorization. ABS and master-cylinder compatibility is not promised either, without an application-specific check.
