BMW G20 Brake Calipers: GT6 Front Kit by Variant

G20 is one generation, not one brake package

Most people searching for BMW G20 brake calipers are looking at a six-piston front kit for 18–21 inch wheels, and much of the market answers that search with a kit tagged by model code alone. This page works the other way round. A generation label that has covered the 3 Series range since 2018 says nothing about the front brakes a particular build left the factory with, so the car is read first and the kit is named afterwards.

What has to be on the file before a bracket is released

Eight items decide whether a six-piston body can sit over the approved rotor inside the wheel that will actually be used. None of them can be guessed from the badge on the boot lid.

OEM wheels are checked with the vehicle year and VIN against our own record file, so the buyer does not have to send ET or J in that case. Aftermarket wheels are different: those figures come from the wheel, not from the car, and that is why they are requested alongside photographs of the spoke and the inner barrel.

M Sport is trim, and the hardware still has to be read off the car

A G20 with M Sport equipment and a G20 without it can leave the factory with different front brakes, and the same trim badge can sit on cars from different model years. The 3 Series G20 record describes the range this way: the G20 and G21 together form the seventh generation, in production since mid-October 2018, with a facelift in July 2022, and the cars are collectively called the G20. That is a generation statement, not a brake specification, and it cannot approve an order for this kit.

The badge describes trim, styling and equipment. A photograph of the original caliper, the rotor diameter and thickness, and the mounting points is what the bracket decision rests on. Buyers who send the trim name instead of the hardware usually end up sending the wheel photographs twice, because the first file cannot be closed without them.

M Performance parts are a separate route again, sold as an OEM retrofit programme rather than as this kit. If a buyer arrives looking for that programme, the right answer is the BMW parts channel, not a GT6 set with a different label on the box.

What one front set carries

One set is a complete front package rather than a pair of loose calipers, and the boundary matters when a workshop is pricing a job.

Rear calipers, rear rotors and parking-brake parts are not in the set, so a two-axle order is quoted as two records and lists 4 calipers and 4 rotors across the two sets. The carton is listed at 45 x 45 x 45 cm with a gross weight of 45 kg, and the figures are rechecked against the final rotor size before dispatch.

What this page will not claim

No OE, OEM or interchange number is published, because none has been established for this kit. The seller record states plainly that material grade, caliper construction, manufacturing process, finish system, rotor metallurgy, testing and any approval document were not supplied, so no forged body, no machining route and no approval number is claimed here. GT6 is the series name the kit is sold under, and the record itself declines to use another company’s name as a product identity.

No stopping-distance figure is published either. The stated position is that the benefit sits in heat capacity, pedal feel and repeated braking stability, which fits the way a disc brake works: the caliper squeezes the pads against the disc and the energy of motion leaves as heat that has to be carried away. Tyres, road surface and pad compound still shape the shortest stop, so the page keeps that order of ideas instead of promising a shorter distance.

Nothing here says the set drops onto an unmeasured car. A calipers-only enquiry is a separate configuration, ABS behaviour, master-cylinder compatibility and the balance between the axles stay vehicle reviews, and two sentences that named G20 as its own neighbour have been corrected: the boundary runs between this model code and others such as G28 or G30, not inside this page.
